Senior Scholars Program Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you for your interest in Ivy Tech Community College and in our Senior Scholars Program! Hopefully this information sheet will answer some of the questions that you may have about the program.

Q: I am wanting to take a computer course. Which course do I sign up for?

We have a number of computer courses available to our Senior Scholars. The two most popular computer courses are CIS 074: Computer Literacy and CIS 101: Introduction to Microcomputers. Computer Literacy is a very basic, introductory class that is helpful for persons with little or no computer experience. If individuals have had some experience and feel comfortable using computers, the Introduction to Microcomputers may be a better option.

Q: How long will the course last?

If you register for summer classes your class will last for 10 weeks. Classes in spring and fall semesters are 16 weeks each.

Q: I know that the courses that I’m taking are "credit" classes. What exactly does that mean and how will that affect me?

The courses that our Senior Scholars take are the exact same classes that we offer to all of our students. That means that you will have the same responsibilities that other students taking that class will have. You will have homework, tests, and quizzes that will count for grades. It is also possible that you will have reading assignments for homework. The requirements vary by each course and instructor. If you have questions about the requirements of your specific course, you will want to contact the instructor. Ivy Tech Community College offers free tutoring for all students that need assistance with an assignment or a class.

Q: Are these courses really free? Does that mean that I don’t have to pay anything?

If you meet all of the criteria for the Senior Scholars Program, you will not be charged for the cost of tuition for the course. However, you will be charged a mandatory technology fee of $40 that all students must pay and you will have to purchase any textbooks that may be required for the course.

Q: What if the course that I have registered for really isn’t what I thought that it would be? What are my options?

If you have any questions or concerns about a course, contact the Admission Office, and if time permits, we can assist you in finding a course more suitable to your needs. We can also assist you in dropping the course completely. We have a number of non-credit courses that may better suit your needs. While non-credit courses are not covered by the Senior Scholars Program, they are reasonably priced and often do no last as long as credit courses.

Q: What if I am not able to attend a class? What if I have a problem with an assignment?

When you start attending your course, your instructor will be your primary source of information about that course. If you have any problems with the course or are not able to attend, you can speak with the instructor after class or contact him/her at the phone number he/she provides. Our instructors do their best to assist students and answer questions you have about the course.

Q: Is there any type of Orientation program that I should attend to give me a better idea of what to expect?

Yes! Each semester we host a New Student Orientation Session at the South campus in Terre Haute. During New Student Orientation, you will have an opportunity to receive information about all of the resources that we provide our students and you will be able to walk around campus to familiarize yourself with our building and our classrooms. If you are interested in attending this orientation, please call the Admission Office at (812) 298-2281 or 1-800-377-4882.

Q: What if I have more questions about the Senior Scholars Program that are not covered on this sheet?

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Amber Harnack in the Admission Office by phone, 812-298-2287 or by email, aharnack@ivytech.edu.
