Transfer FAQ
Will Ivy Tech credits transfer?
Many general education credits, and in some cases, all program credits will transfer to selected colleges and universities. A list of colleges and universities that have agreements with Ivy Tech is included in our Transfer Guide. This listing does not imply that all courses transfer automatically to all in-state colleges and universities listed. Each college or university has course specific credit transfer agreements. Colleges and universities also review credits earned at an institution and determine course transfers that might include courses not in an agreement. It is the right and responsibility of the receiving institution to decide whether to accept credits from another institution. Students interested in transfer credit should check with the receiving institution.
Does every college or university accept transfer students?
Most four-year institutions accept transfer students from an accredited college or university. However, a student needs to check the catalog of the receiving college or university for its transfer requirements. Each institution has its own guidelines. Ivy Tech has specific agreements with numerous colleges and universities to accept graduates from specific programs. These students typically enter the receiving institution as a junior. Some of these colleges and universities include Indiana State University, Ball State University, IUPUI, and the University of Southern Indiana.
How does a student transfer credit to Ivy Tech?
A student may request a credit evaluation of courses taken at other colleges and universities by providing an official transcript to the Ivy Tech Admission's Office. Once the Admission's Office receives the transcript, it is sent to the Office of Records for review. The Records Office reviews earned credits and determines which, if any, credits transfer to a specific identified Ivy Tech program. Note: Not all credits transfer, even if earned at an accredited institution. The courses must be current and appropriate.
What happens to earned credits if a student changes programs?
Students often change programs or courses of study after admission. In some cases, the earned credits cannot be used for the new program or course of study. However, in many instances students find they can use otherwise lost credits as elective credits. Discussing such credit transfer with an advisor is most helpful.
How does a student transfer credit from Ivy Tech?
A student may request an official transcript from the Office of Records be sent to the college or university they are transferring to.
What qualifies a student as a transfer student?
Admission and transfer requirements for most four-year institutions vary. A student needs to contact the receiving school to determine qualifications. Most colleges and universities do, however, have limits on the number of credit hours that they will accept.
How far in advance does a student need to apply for transfer?
Some schools have a rolling admission policy, meaning they process transfer applications as they are received. Other schools require a student to apply during a priority-filing period, which can be up to a year before a student wishes to enter. Because procedures vary, the student needs to contact the receiving institution. Ivy Tech-Wabash Valley processes incoming transfer applications as they are received.
Is it possible to transfer courses from several different institutions?
Yes, but the receiving institution may place limits on transfer credits. Most colleges and universities provide this information in their catalogs.
Will grades below a C transfer?
Grades below a C normally do not transfer. Ivy Tech-Wabash Valley does not accept any incoming transfer grade below a C. Each college or university has transfer grade requirements. Please check with the institution for clarification.
What is an articulation agreement?
An articulation agreement is a document representing an agreement between two colleges or universities specifying the exact courses that will transfer from one institution to another.
Do all instructional divisions at Ivy Tech have transfer agreements?
All instructional divisions at Ivy Tech-Wabash Valley have some required courses covered under an articulation agreement. Some include only general education courses while others include entire programs.
Who can I talk to for more advice?
Please feel free to visit Deborah Giffel, Transfer Advisor in the Office of Admission to discuss your transfer opportunities.
What are the responsibilities of the student?
A prospective transfer student should plan a course of study that will meet the requirements of a degree or certificate program at the receiving institution. To be specific, a student should identify the courses that will transfer as early as possible.
