Informational Interviewing
One of the best ways to find out about careers is to talk to someone who is in the career field you would like to explore.
How to find people to talk to about their career:
- Ask a family friend
- Ask instructors and teachers about people they could introduce you to
- Ask Career Services to connect you to graduates
Set up the meeting. Call or e-mail them and introduce yourself and ask if they would be willing to speak with you about their career. You could say something like this:
"Hi, I am Marla Careerfinder and Ms. Smith from Terre Haute North gave me your number. I am interested in a career in Graphic Design and I was wondering if I could set up a time to meet with you to ask some questions about your career."
What do I ask? Your meeting will probably last about 20-30 minutes and these are just a few of the questions you could ask:
- What is a usual day like for you?
- What do you like best about your job?
- What do you like least about your job?
- What kind of education do you have?
- Did you do an internship? Would you recommend one?
- What advice would you give to someone starting in this career field?
- What are the opportunities for advancement and how should I prepare for them?
When you are finished, thank them!
After the meeting:
- Send a thank you note or e-mail.
- Consider if this confirms your career choice or if you need to change directions.
