Interviews
Use these basic tips for interview success:
- Be professional and polite when arranging an interview. Have a pen and paper ready to take down information about your interview. Ask for directions if necessary and thank them for the opportunity.
- Take a nice folder or portfolio with copies of your resume and references with you to an interview.
- You should have a written list of questions for employer. Note: These questions should not focus on salary and benefits, but the specifics of the job and the kind of person they will be hiring.
- Wear professional interview clothes.
- You may be interviewing with one individual or an entire committee. Be sure to naturally make eye contact with each person in the room as you answer questions.
- Do not chew gum or have a mint in your mouth during an interview. It is also important not to smoke immediately before an interview
- As the interview is coming to a close, be sure to ask what the next steps in the process will be. They will give you an idea of the time line for their decision and many times will indicate the appropriate way to follow up to determine if you have been selected.
- When the interview is completed, again, professionally shake their hand, thank them for their time, smile, have good eye contact, and be polite!
- Within 24 hours of leaving an interview you should send a handwritten or typed thank you note to the person/people interviewing you. This note should thank them for their time and the opportunity to interview.
