Lumina Grant Program
A $75,000 grant from the Lumina Foundation will equip Ivy Tech to help Indiana meet new federal requirements spelled out in the No Child Left Behind Act. The grant supports a project that will both upgrade the credentials of the state's teacher aides and increase opportunities for Hoosiers to prepare for teaching careers.
The law requires teacher aides in public schools to upgrade their credentials by January 2005 by completing an associate degree in any field, earning at least 60 college credits, or passing a proficiency exam. Lumina approached the College about the project because of Ivy Tech's statewide reach and ability to help the state meet the new requirement.
Starting this fall, Ivy Tech will target the state's 17,000 teacher aides with a marketing campaign to explain the requirements of the law, provide information on course offerings, and help the aides enroll. The College will also distribute pamphlets, fliers and posters to schools and professional associations and promote the project through electronic newsletters and campus web sites.
In addition, Ivy Tech's Wabash Valley Region is preparing a model degree program for special education teacher aides. This cohort-based AS in education program will be delivered onsite at several schools within four area school districts. The pilot program will launch this fall, and the region will work on an articulation with Indiana State University.
