Medical Assisting Program
Medical Assistants work in a variety of areas such as physician's offices, hospitals, laboratories, and clinics. The vast majority of Medical Assistants work in physician's offices performing administrative and/or clinical duties. The health care system is changing constantly in our country and many physicians have found Medical Assistants to be adaptable and versatile members of the health care team.
The graduate of the Medical Assistant program is a professional, multi-skilled person dedicated to assisting in patient care management. Competence in the field also requires that Medical Assistants display professionalism, communicate effectively, and provide instruction to patients. A required externship under the direct supervision of a physician provides valuable on-the-job experience.
The graduate of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) and the Generalist Technical Certificate (GEN-TC) Medical Assisting Program are multi-skilled professionals ready to become part of the health care team. These graduates are cross-trained to provide more than one function or discipline. These combined functions can be found in a broad spectrum of health-related jobs, ranging in complexity, including both clinical and administrative skills. Graduates of the AAS and GEN-TC are prepared to take the national exam to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). The American Association of Medical Assistants Certifying Board (AAMA-CB) awards the CMA credential after successful completion of the exam.
The Wabash Valley Region of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana's Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (CRB-AAMAE).

Medical Assisting or Nursing
The key difference between a Medical Assisting program and a Practical Nursing program is that the Medical Assisting program will train to assist the physician in an office setting and the Nursing will train to give bedside care. For more information on the differences, please see Trying to Choose Between Medical Assisting and Nursing - What are the differences?
