Student Leadership Academy
The purpose of the Student Leadership Academy (SLA) is to assist students in their personal development as they prepare to assume greater responsibilities and leadership roles at Ivy Tech and in the community. Such roles include officer positions and membership in various student organizations in addition to leadership opportunities within your community/career field. SLA is conducted as a class and requires interested students to make application at the beginning of the fall semester for consideration to participate. There are some basic requirements for consideration:
- Students should be degree or certificate-declared and in satisfactory academic standing.
- Complete a Student Leadership Academy application (available in the Office of Student Life- D124) and drop it off at the Copy Center, to be placed in Nina Storey's mailbox, by the September 5, 2008 deadline.
- Students should be able to attend each class.
- Demonstrate an interest and willingness to actively engage in classroom and team building activities.
- Demonstrate a desire to utilize leadership skills gained through Student Leadership Academy in the classroom, campus/community organizations, and your career.
Leadership Topics
Subject areas include, but are not limited to leadership styles and skills, presentation skills, group problem solving, team building, time and project management, personality types and how to market your leadership experience. Topical areas to be covered:
- Leadership of Self
- Leadership in the Community/Service Learning
- Leadership of Team
- Leadership of Organization
Expected Outcomes
As a result of this class, you will be able to:
- Define "leadership" in your own terms
- Understand your own leadership style
- Articulate leadership from individual and follower perspectives
- Understand the role of leadership in effective teams
- Understand your own values and beliefs and how these manifest themselves in your life
