FINANCIAL AID QUESTIONS

Q: What’s the difference between Subsidized loans and Unsubsidized loans?
A: Subsidized – the government covers the interest for the duration you are enrolled as an eligible student. An eligible student must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours per semester. Unsubsidized – the student is required to pay the interest charges on quarterly basis. The student does, however, have the option to have those charges deferred and capitalized into repayment at the time repayment begins.

Q: Do I have to apply for a Pell grant even if I know I will not be eligible and/or only want a loan?
A: Yes…Federal regulations state that a student must apply for a Pell grant before applying for a Stafford loan. All processing of your Pell grant application must be completed before your loan application can be processed. The result of your Pell application is used when determining loan eligibility.

Q: What is the federal school code for Ivy Tech Community College-Region 7?
A: The federal school code is: 008547

Q: How do I get my VA benefits started?
A: You will need to obtain the Application for Veteran Benefits (22-1990). This application can be mailed to you or picked up at the Financial Aid Office. Once complete, submit the application along with a copy of your DD-214 or Notice of Basic Eligibility (Reserves) to the Veteran’s Coordinator.

Q: If I drop a class, will it affect my financial aid?
A: If you drop a class/classes, you could go on probation or termination. You may also owe back to the government a portion of the financial aid you received. Before dropping any classes, we encourage you to contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss your status. Please refer to the Dates & Data Calendar for details on Standards of Progress.

Q: When is the last day to register and receive financial aid, if eligible?
A: You must be registered by Friday of the first week of class in order for your financial aid to be awarded.

Q: How can I apply for financial aid?
A: You are welcome to bring your 2000 income taxes in and a financial aid counselor will assist you in completing the Pell grant application. You may also call and request an application be mailed to you. Financial aid counselors are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Q: Is there a deadline for filing the Pell grant application?
A: You may file a Pell grant application at any time. However, if you want to be considered for state aid for the Fall and Spring semesters, you must have filed your FAFSA by March 1 of the current year. For example: you plan to attend classes in the Fall of 2001 and Spring 2002…you will need to file your FAFSA by March 1 of 2001 to be considered for state aid.

Q: I now live on my own, why do I have to use my parental information on the FAFSA?
A: There are seven questions in Section C of the FAFSA that determine a student’s dependency status. If you answer “NO” to each question, you will be required to provide your parent’s income and household information. A dependency override may be available depending upon your circumstance. You must contact the Financial Aid Office to determine if you are eligible for a dependency override.

Q: How long does it take to process a Pell grant or Loan application?
A: Pell grant – If the financial aid office processes your Pell application, you can expect a response in 7 - 10 business days. The information will be downloaded to the financial aid office electronically. You will also receive a Student Information Report in the mail in approximately 2-3 weeks. If it becomes necessary for the financial aid office to process any corrections to your Student Information Report, an additional 7-10 business days will be required.
Loan – If the financial aid file is complete, normal processing for a loan application is 24-48 working hrs from time of submission. The loan is electronically submitted to the Lender. The financial aid office will have a response back from the Lender within 24 working hrs. You will receive a Promissory Note from the Lender in 1-2 weeks. Once you get the Promissory Note, you will need to complete the necessary items and return it to the lender. You will be advised of the loan disbursements dates in a letter after the financial aid office processes the application.

Q: When will I receive any remaining funds on my account?
A: Provided that your financial aid file is complete, aid will apply to the student accounts approximately 30-45 days after the beginning of the semester. You can expect to receive any remaining funds within 7-10 days.

Q: How do I transfer Pell/Loan information to/from Ivy Tech Community College?
A: Pell grants may be transferred by giving your new school a copy of your Student Information Report. The information needed from the report is your SSN, transaction number, and DRN number. This information will allow the new school of choice to submit a request to receive your Student Information Report. If you do not have a copy of your Student Information Report, you may call 1-800-433-3243 to obtain a copy.
Loans are not transferable. You will need to re-apply for a loan at your new school of choice. Remember…if you have a student loan at your current school, you will need to notify your lender of your school change or your account will go into a repayment status.

Q: What kinds of aid are available?
A: There are three types of financial aid available:
GRANTS - The first step in applying for financial aid is to complete the Pell grant application. If your application is submitted prior to the March 1 deadline, you could be eligible for a state grant.
LOANS - Depending on the results of your Pell grant application, you may want to apply for a federal Stafford Loan. A Stafford Loan must be repaid upon completion of college, withdrawal, or if you drop below half-time status.
SCHOLARSHIPS - Each semester, there are various scholarships available through the financial aid office. The availability of these scholarships is based on fund availability from the various sponsors. There is a scholarship book available in the financial aid office. You may read in detail about the various scholarships available and apply for the scholarships that you may be eligible for. Scholarships do not need to be paid back.
