FAQ

This page contains a number of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's). If there are any questions you still have about the staff at Ivy Tech Community College's Student Counseling Center(SCC) feel free to contact the center via E-mail (astagg-ne@ivytech.edu )or by phone at: (812) 298-2398 (Ext 2398 on campus).

Q: Are the services at the SCC really confidential?
A: Yes…. But, everything you say at the SCC remains confidential between you and your counselor except for five very important situations where your counselor must break confidentiality.
  • You are a threat to yourself: In cases where an individual is a threat to themselves (suicide, severe self-mutilation, etc.) then the counselor is required by law to make sure they are safe, even if this means breaking confidentiality.
  • You are a threat to someone else: Started by a very famous case called Tarasoff v. State of California, all counselors have a legal obligation or "duty to warn" individuals who might be in danger by a client they are seeing. Simply put if you are a serious threat to another then the counselor must warn that other individual.
  • You report you are abusing a child or know of child abuse that is occurring: Counselors are what is known in the legal world as "mandated reporters" which means if they learn of child abuse they must report it to the proper authorities.
  • You report elder abuse: This is in the same category as child abuse.
  • A court orders the counselor's records: If a court sends an order that records are to be released then the counselor must release those records and break confidentiality.

Q: Who can make use of the services?
A: Any full-time or part-time Ivy Tech Community College student. In order to make use of the services a student only needs to be carrying one credit hour the semester they are seeking the services.
